Zack Snyder’s new movie Army of the Dead is coming to Netflix next month, and recently the first full trailer debuted online. While Snyder is an American filmmaker who generally makes movies in the English language, his films are popular all over the world. Recently, a few of Snyder’s most devoted fans in Nigeria remade the Army of the Dead trailer, and Netflix Film Club decided to show it to Snyder himself.
Army of the Dead is described as a zombie-action-heist movie and tells the story of a group of mercenaries who plot a heist on a Las Vegas casino during a zombie outbreak. The film is directed by and co-written by Snyder and stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Nataro, and many more. This marks Snyder’s second Zombie movie, with the director returning to the genre 17-years after Dawn of the Dead. That 2004 remake was Snyder’s directorial debut and the film arguably paved the way for the director’s career. While it’s widely regarded to be the lesser version when compared to the 1978 predecessor, Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead is still a popular entry for the zombie-horror franchise, with Bloody Disgusting ranking it amongst their top 20 horror films of the decade.
The remake of the Army of the Dead trailer was put together by the Nigerian comedy group Ikorodu Bois’ (@ikorodu_bois). This isn’t the first time they’ve remade trailers, as they’ve also given the same treatment to other Netflix films, including the Charlize Theron comic book movie The Old Guard and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth’s action movie Extraction. The fan-made trailer is essentially a shot-for-shot remake of the Army of the Dead trailer, using DIY effects and members of the group in place of the film’s stars. A lot of love and effort went into replicating the trailer, and it’s clear that the members of Ikorodu Bois’ are big Snyder fans.
In the video uploaded by Netflix Film Club, Snyder watches the trailer and reacts to it. He’s impressed by what he sees, making note of their use of real fire and their ability to get their dog to bark on cue. At the end of the video, we’re treated to a touching moment where Snyder actually talks with the members of Ikorodu Bois’ through an online video chat. Snyder reminisces about how he started making films when he was just 11-years old and totally understands what they’re doing. Many of the greatest filmmakers in cinema history started out making DIY projects when they were kids, such as the great Steven Spielberg.
The video is a nice reminder of Snyder’s continuing efforts to reach out to fans and support their creativity. He ends the video by saying that he can’t wait to see their movie when it comes out one day in the future.
Army of the Dead will be available exclusively on Netflix on May 14th, 2021.
