The first official trailer for Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy has arrived and promises a series full of skull-smashing punches, explosions, and epic fight scenes. Based on the comic book series by Mark Millar, who is responsible for bringing stories like Kingsman and Kick-Ass to life, the upcoming television show will be introducing a new breed of superheroes to the world on May 7, 2021.
The trailer for Jupiter’s Legacy sets the plot where a group of people seems to get special powers on an island and work together to save the world for almost a century. But, it’s time for the team of aging superheroes, known as the Union, to pass on the baton to the next generation. Whether the children will live up to their parents’ legacy will be the big focus of the show.
Millar, who serves as executive producer on the show, started creating hype around the trailer on Tuesday when he tweeted the first poster of Jupiter’s Legacy and announced the trailer would be releasing the next day. After the trailer dropped, Miller confessed that he was “quite nervous” about people’s reactions. His comic book series, which was never afraid to tackle real-life issues, has been received well and with the show releasing soon, fans seemed pretty excited, which had Millar tweeting, “I think something special happened here.”
Jupiter’s Legacy will feature Josh Duhamel as Sheldon Sampson, who goes by the name The Utopian in his superhero avatar, the central character caught up in the power shift comparable to The Godfather‘s story. The younger generation seems to be living a life that Sampson doesn’t approve of, leading to conflict within the family. Based on the trailer, they don’t seem to have complete control over their powers yet and will be seen using them in reckless ways.
Apart from Sampson, some of the other older heroes in focus will be Leslie Bibb’s Grace/Lady Liberty, who is Sheldon’s wife in the comics, Ben Daniels’ Walter Sampson, Sheldon’s brother who, after gaining superpowers on the island, becomes Brainwave, and Matt Lanter’s George Hutchence/Skyfox, who in the comics is seen as going from one of the original members of the Union to a villain.
The eight-episode series adaptation of Jupiter’s Legacy will be moving between two timelines – the 1920s and the current time. The superhero drama will include the “complex dynamics of family, power, and loyalty,” sticking with the theme of the comic series. It will be the first adaptation of Millar’s work by Netflix, with the streaming giant having previously acquired the writer’s comic book company Millarworld and the rights to all his work.
Jupiter’s Legacy is set to premiere on Netflix on May 7, 2021.
