The Call of Duty franchise has been going strong for nearly two decades, consistently bringing quality FPS titles to each generation of consoles along the way. Now Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is about to shake things up by setting guns aside to allow gamers to go fishing.

Fishing will be added to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘ Zombies game mode with the release of the first Outbreak quest on May 20. While Treyarch hasn’t officially confirmed what fishing will look like in Cold War, it may be similar to a previous Call of Duty title that also included it.

Fishing isn’t exactly a brand new feature in the Call of Duty franchise, with 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare including the Fishing Pole and fishing side activity on the Exo Zombies map Carrier. In Advanced Warfare, the fishing pole played a role in the Flotsam & Jetsam Easter egg and it was built by putting together the reel, fishing line, and hook. Zombies fans could also fish for 100 credits, a redfish, or a shovel which would each benefit them in some way. Treyarch confirmed fishing for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War simply by saying that fishing would be added to Zombies with the upcoming Outbreak update.

It’s currently unclear whether Treyarch will make Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies fans build the fishing pole or if the feature will play a larger role than it did in Advanced Warfare. Zombies gamers won’t have long to wait to find out as fishing will be added to the game mode with next week’s mid-season update alongside new weapons, round-based maps, a new main quest, Intel Documents, Audio Logs, Radio Transmissions, and new Artifacts to discover along the way.

Fortnite includes fishing as a side activity for players to earn weapons or consumables, and this may be no different with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies’ fishing. While many fans of Call of Duty: Warzone may be intrigued to fish in the popular free-to-play battle royale, the feature has only been officially confirmed for the Zombies game mode. Since zombies have found their way over to Warzone, there may be more overlap in the future that introduces the fishing mechanics to the battle royale, but Zombies fans will at least be able to cast their lines next week.

Several gameplay improvements and bug fixes will be implemented in both Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies and the Dead Ops Arcade 3 game mode. Dead Ops Arcade 3 will also be receiving a big new addition with the upcoming mid-season update when the Silverback Slideways bonus map is added to the game. More additional content will be added to Black Ops Cold War Zombies as the season continues, with Treyarch assuring fans that they can expect more to come before the completion of Season 4.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available right now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
