Fans of the Dragon Ball franchise know that May 9 is Goku Day. As a special treat to mark the special day, series creator Akira Toriyama and Toei Animation made a pretty exciting announcement regarding an upcoming Dragon Ball project.
The project is an all new Dragon Ball Super movie to be released in 2022. This was leaked online two days ago and seemed very likely, but it is now officially confirmed. In the note from Toriyama, he says while the project is currently under development, he’s remaining tight-lipped on what the plot will focus on. He also says that they will be giving audiences some surprises in the form of “an unexpected character” and that they’re also venturing into “unexplored territory” with the film’s visuals. Whether this means a slightly different art style or animation is not confirmed, but it’s certainly intriguing.
The first Dragon Ball Super film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released in 2018 and was a massive success. The movie is set after the Universal Survival Saga shown in Dragon Ball Super and follows characters Goku and Vegeta as they meet another Saiyan who is incredibly powerful, named Broly. It also gave a bit more of an in-depth look at the history of these characters and where they come from. Dragon Ball Super: Broly received tons of acclaim from critics and Dragon Ball fans alike. It also went on to become not only the highest-grossing Dragon Ball film ever, but the 13th highest-grossing anime film of all time. Based on the hype and success of the first film to carry the Dragon Ball Super title, fans are pretty excited to see what’s coming next.
Fans are already speculating online where this film could go, and what Toriyama might mean in his cryptic note. Giving fans a little teaser of what’s coming in terms of potential unexpected characters and a different look to what they’re used to has certainly set them off. Some even say it could be the return of Broly, who became a very popular character after the last film. There is a bit of talk online though expressing worry over a possible new look for the movie, as Toriyama says they are experimenting with new things. Changing the visual style of an anime is a big risk, as it’s almost impossible that everyone will be happy.
Like many other fandoms, the Dragon Ball internet fandom is pretty intense. Almost everything attached to the franchise becomes a big hit, and it’s highly unlikely that this new movie will be any different. Though it’s only just been announced and absolutely nothing is known including a promo poster or title, the hype is already very real.
